The municipality of Landgraaf (the Netherlands) has been working for quite some time on a multi-purpose centre, which will bring together a range of services and organisations under one roof. The existing city hall will be extended with a pavilion, a transparent space in contact with and with views of its surroundings on all sides. The heart of the new KIA coincides with the existing city hall’s central space. The new heart has its main entrance on the Raadhuisplein (city hall square) but will also have a prominent entrance at the rear of the city hall together with a green passage leading to Lichtenberg City Park. The new pavilion will have its own distinct character, the form and materials harmonising beautifully with the curved contours of the existing city hall. The curves emphasise the entrances and guide the way through the building. The transparent façade and the fluid forms allow inside and outside to blend together, bringing the park-like atmosphere into the building. The expressive theme of the building’s architecture is based on the knowledge centre’s intended purpose of being a welcoming, dynamic, interactive place that brings old and new together.
