The location of this project is the city of Linz in northeast Austria, making up buildings 6 and 8 of Anzengruberstrasse.
Both parts of the project are rectangular in shape and have a combined area of 887.45m². The north facing façade is open to the street, where-as the south facing façade turns into the plot. Orientation played a key role in the development of the project, resulting in these façades, respectively. The objective was to maximize the number of dwellings with south facing orientation. Following this guideline, the second larger building was designed to accommodate fully destine housing and vertical circulation areas on the north facing façade.
It was decided to use the same language in both the North and South façades, providing light depending on the time of day. The exterior façade facing North is more opaque with an arrangement of apertures revealing what is happening behind the façade. Subsequently the south facing façade will be more permeable to collecting light with large windows and balconies. The roof became a defining element in creating an image for the building.
We worked on traditional Austrian cover, deforming the topline in order to generate a distinctive image; exposing penthouse terraces in order to breakdown the volume of the gable roof.
