Vast areas of farmland in Minai Sanriku were damaged by seawater from tsunami caused by the Great Earthquake of Tohoku Region in 2011. During our meetings with residents, we found out that there were vast amount of salt-damaged earth that was no longer usable for farming and they didnft know what to do with it. Since Atelier Tekuto has unique experiences and construction techniques in dealing with earth as building material, they asked us to build an emergency supply warehouse using the salt-damaged earth. We researched, studied and invented new construction method using the Minami Sanriku earth. During construction process, staff of Atelier Tekuto held workshops with local residents, corporations and many volunteers. We made earth bricks, laied them and made the building with our own hands. Since earth brick making doesnft require special skill or technique, many people who were temporarily living in the evacuation centers participated in our workshops. building use: Emergency warehouse building area: 9.98m² total floor area: 9.98m² construction: Bricks + Wood architectural design: YAMASHITA, Yasuhiro / Atelier Tekuto photograph: Atelier Tekuto
