The Shed

The owners live on a large piece of land in Springfield, MO and use the shed to store maintenance equipment for upkeep of the property. We designed their residence first, and the process was so smooth and rewarding that they asked us to build The Shed on a repurposed Cul-de-sac beside it. The shed is sited to the west of the house off a winding entry drive. It’s a singular element meant to stand alone in the landscape rather than referencing the design of the house. Prefabrication saved construction time and ensured a high level of quality and precision The shed is composed of identical modular frames, wall panels and roof trusses.. The prefabricated galvanized steel frames were welded in our shop in Kansas City, then transported to the site, where they were bolted together. The system was designed and built by our studio. A white oak rain-screen wraps the walls, roof, and soffit and is expressed as a singular element. A galvanized metal fascia matches the steel structure beneath the skin. Polygal end walls with large operable doors complete the tripartite material composition. Linear T5 fluorescent lighting runs along the structural members inside. The white oak was taken from trees on the property. The wood was allowed to weather and gray out over time. As a result, the exterior is varied and richly textured. The front façade is made of 16 MM frosted polygal sheets on a 2x2 steel frame. Large operable doors with a built-in steel locking mechanism span the whole width of the shed. The Shed is simple and elemental. With natural materials and simple construction elements, the Shed doesn’t draw attention to itself but appears to be almost a sculptural element in the landscape.
