Westmorland is a luxury dwelling, designed and project managed by Snook, who, together with a team of subcontractors delivered all stages of the design role whilst overseeing the construction stage of the project. Its expression in modernist living, the intersection of two separate forms, and the spaces this creates, allows for some interesting architectural ideas such as the seemingly impossible cantilevering of the brick 1st floor over the heavily glazed rear corner, or the central fire place being the sole form of structure in an open plan living/kitchen/diner.
However, this architectural adventurousness is not at the expense of a comfortable residence. The warm concrete mass, with its full height windows and central log fire offer a meeting of the industrial and the cosy. The double height entrance space, concealed on the front façade, is a surprise experience once the property is entered- exposing the garden and intricately designed steel staircase. The linear brick used accentuates the linear nature of the elevation and is a motif used throughout, examples seen in the slot window and timber cladding on the front elevation.
It’s the attention to detail that is synonymous with Snook and was further heightened by the increased control gained through project management, ensuring the construction phase was expertly executed and unexpected negatives on site where turned into positives.
