Penthouse in Berlin

Stretched out over the rooftop, this Berlin apartment presented us with an exciting challenge. Although the main space was already connected with an open gallery flooded with light from an adjoining terrace this apartment did not have a lofty open feeling one expected. By removing a wall and integrating an ill lit bedroom with the kitchen and gallery rooms we were able to deconstruct the maze. Then we reorganized the space with a generous color concept to connect, highlight the various areas throughout the space. Across the apartment the colour application ranges from subtle shifts to strong juxtaposition. Whilst the back bedrooms take on calmer hues and less saturated tones, the front rooms are injected with a range of both deep and bold as well as light and fresh tones. Considering each surface in relation to the neighbouring surfaces we were able to create a penthouse that not only takes colour as the main focus of the overall aesthetic but also as the primary method in defining and complimenting the form of each space. To complete the apartment a range of items and objects furnish each room often in juxtaposition: with hard rough surfaces coupled with finer furniture as well as oversized and smaller items side by side whilst maintaining a consistency in comfort and colour from room to room. The result is an open and enlivened space that provides both the comfort of a home as well as a unique space for hosting.
