On Strijp-S, the formerly owned Philips property in Eindhoven, diederendirrix converted the monumental radio factory SBP, a city landmark, into Building Anton. A city has emerged within a building in which people can both live and work in beautiful lofts with four metre high ceilings. Building Anton is a national monument that is part of a series of former Philips factories on Strijp-S in Eindhoven. This area transforms itself from a closed industrial enclave into a vibrant new neighbourhood in the heart of the city. This particular urban redevelopment was awarded the Gulden Feniks (Golden Phoenix) this past June 4. Together with several other buildings Building Anton forms a “ridge” within the built fabric, locally called the “hoge rug”, the historic backbone of this new neighbourhood. In Building Anton diederendirrix combines residential, business and recreational functions into a compact design. To create a lively, urban environment, it was important that the building’s residents, employees and visitors could have chance encounters throughout the building. To achieve this, we perforated the building with large elliptical cylinders making it possible to connect the floors both visually and physically by way of straight-flight stairs placed in the voids. This way, informal routes are created, which cross the standard building circulation. Building Anton consists of 130 lofts, each consisting of a single space of 50 or 80 square meters. The ground floor and first floor are primarily intended for commercial use.
