The study was commissioned by the College of Music and Theatre Hannover (HMTH) to investigate how its location in the area of the Expo 2000 can be improved.
To achieve this, a strategy for the area has been developed which is based on the implementation of small interventions to trigger a re-vitalization. The foyer of the HMTH, which is at the same time the entrance space to the college’s own theatre, has been selected to test the concept.
A large spatial sculpture is proposed, integrating a café, seating and work areas for students as well as plenty of information displays and exhibition space. The very distinctive style of that sculpture is based on Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbau (Kurt Schwitters, a world famous dada artist was based in Hannover and is the namesake for the college building) and enables the HMTH to develop a very unique identity.
