In green fields around Voorst, close to Zutphen, stands the two centuries old farmstead : “Bij den Oorsprong”. This estate lies on a hill in the century old flow area of the river IJssel in Gelderland. The direct surroundings is of exquisite beauty: a French orchard, beautiful views and a private stream.
Sculptor Madelon Gouman and her husband wanted to add two buildings to this ensemble. “Modern architecture in a farmer’s style, carefully placed into the surroundings and playing with the views. 100 % sustainable and affordable”.
FARO designed a no-frills barn and a fully equipped workshop. Very carefully placed so all sides have either wide views or view that are carefully framed by the other buildings.
The two buildings are made of 100% wood. The exterior walls and the roof are made of Stellac, the rafters of pine tree and the interior walls of underlayment. The insulation consists of flax. The barns have a traditional farmers’ proportion of a roof that slopes 35°, cleverly placed windows, semi-transparent blinds and very transparent doors, or, where needed hidden thoroughfares.
The barns fit in a series of barn like structures that are becoming a signature for FARO Architecten. This series includes private barns, a church, a multi-family home and a care facility. The program of these projects is very diverse, the binding factor is the character of a modern barn: sustainable, accessible and rural.
