Hello Wood’s architects built Christmas tree of 5000 pieces of firewood, which will all be given to families in need after Twelfth Night
This year Hello Wood built a unique Christmas tree together with Design Terminal and the Hungarian Interchurch Aid in one of the most central squares of Budapest. The installation is 11 meters high, 4,5 meters wide and was made of 5000 pieces of firewood that weigh 150 quintals. After last year’s project, when the architects built a huge Christmas tree made of sledges, this year’s goal was to create a Christmas tree for the Budapest community, which symbolizes the importance of caring about each other. All the firewood used in the installation will be given to families in need in January.
The role of architecture changed a lot in the last few years. After the crisis it has become more important to create works which are for everybody, not only the exclusive 1% of the population. Hello Wood represents this socially responsive architecture. In their annual summer camps and projects throughout the year, they are searching for new ways of community building and social architecture. The installation, called “Charity Tree” represents the importance of the community and social awareness: not only because people traditionally gather around Christmas trees to celebrate together, but also because around Christmas, it is particularly important to think of the thousands of Hungarian families who have daily problems with heating during wintertime. Hello Wood, Design Terminal and the Hungarian Interchurch Aid launched to project to raise awareness of these burning social problems that we have to find solution to as a community. Hello Wood’s symbolic answer was to create a temporary installation, which can be used to heat homes during wintertime.
The Christmas tree was built for 5 days working 24 hours a day in co-operation with jointers and highscalers. Inside the tree there is a chapel-like sacred inner space, where everybody can find some silence to contemplate in the middle of the buzzing city. The Charity Tree belongs to the people of Budapest, until Epiphany, it can be visited during day and night. After dark it gets special lighting effects designed by Philips Hungary.
