FRIDAY – JAN 16th 2015 - Progressive hospitality, design and development are coming together in Williamsburg with the exciting announcement of the YOTEL brand’s first Brooklyn hotel designed by HWKN.
Developed in collaboration between YOTEL and Synapse Development Group, HWKN’s design for the 100,000sqf mixed use project will position the new YOTEL as one of the most iconic buildings in New York and a landmark gateway to Williamsburg.
Situated next to the BQE, the building's design negotiates between the elevated roadway and the surrounding neighborhood by way of an elevated plinth. At street level it is greets the pedestrian with large retail exposures. At the level of the BQE is a vibrant rooftop garden atop which rises the 110 key YOTEL tower. The tower is topped by a limited number of condominiums that offer an expansive view of Brooklyn, the East River and Manhattan beyond. The tower's facade is designed to be a new landmark for the area that is as much about what happens within as the frenetic city around the site.
Taking cues from traditional architectural elements of Brooklyn, the primarily monochrome tower features a cascading, shingle effect façade that gradates in tone and finish to create a unique yet timeless form through its simplicity.
Matthias Hollwich, Principal of HWKN notes “We felt it was important to create a distinct and modern design that would establish YOTEL Williamsburg as a destination for global travelers, while the sculptural qualities of the building also connects with Williamsburg’s artistic bent.”
”Williamsburg is an amazing community - it deserves architecture that strives to match its richness and vibrancy” added Marc Kushner, Principal of HWKN.
YOTEL Williamsburg is scheduled to open in 2017.
