The House D, located in a garden city neighborhood in the metropolis of São Paulo was
designed to house an architect, her husband and their three children. The urban
dimensions of the site imposed the need for verticalization, making it a "Town House".
Like other houses by STUDIOMK27, certain architectural principles were adopted to
guarantee optimizing thermal comfort for a tropical climate with minimal use of air-conditioning. In the organization of the plan as much as the use of materials to the
conception of the details, the premise of the architecture is to respect the conditions
of the place where it is inserted.
Passing though the Corten steel front gate, you come upon a small marble patio with a
pintanga tree. This architectural garden functions as a receiving area for the guests.
Between the frame, which is totally retractable, and the internal space, there is a 2.5m
span of the superior volume above the floor of the living room that forms a veranda.
More than a place that is both open and closed, the veranda protects the living room
on rainy days. It is thereby possible to keep the frames open even during the thunder
storms of summer. Entry to the house is through these large floor-to-ceiling glass
doors.
The solution of transparency and visual continuity adopted with the sliding doors that
disappear into the walls, permitted that the entire lot could longitudinally become one
single space. In the back of the land, a wooden-decked garden is the external space
where one can remain reading a book while lying on the hammock. The cross
ventilation in the living room, coming from this garden in the back, significantly
improves the thermal sensation on hot days.
The second floor contains the private area and was fundamental in defining the
external finishings of the residence: wooden mashrabiya panels. In the bedrooms,
folding doors with these elements control the insulation and allow for shaded
ventilation in the internal ambiance. Volumetrically, the house can be read as a box
made of wood and raw concrete (traditional material used in Brazilian modern
architecture), suspended over an empty space of the land. On the top floor, nested in
the large volume, a small box likewise of wood and concrete, complete the program:
besides a bedroom, a TV room and a small office, there is an external deck, a
gardened-terrace of an urban house.
